At UNI PLC Youth, social movement unionism is one of the way to reach out to the community in the Philippines and to contribute to building a more just and fair society. Over the last 3 years, UNI PLC youth have committed to helping to feed a group of 70 children at one of the urban slum areas in the Manila and has since gain the recognition by the local governments of their efforts there. At the recent UNI Apro YOUth Breaking Thru in Nagasaki workshop, UNI Apro youth participants made a trip to the Payatas to gain first hand experience on the day-to-day running of the Payatas feeding centre. They were assigned to cook (starting at 5am in the morning), to clean the centre, to play simple games with the children and to distribute the donations to the families. These are just some of the regular tasks that the local nutritionist volunteers have to do every single day, regardless of rain or shine. At present, the feeding centre feeds 70 children at 10am everyday.

The Payatas feeding centre was recently painted, 2 days prior to the UNI Apro youth visit and green was the color representing nutrition and health. Participants also helped in decorating the centre with wall stickers.

In addition to the feeding program, UNI PLC youth is also exploring ways to expand their work at the Payatas. Currently, 6 children are receiving scholarship from the solidarity support of JPGU. We hope to be able to send more children to school.
