The organisations have formed a joint working group to discuss and plan a campaign to ensure decent working condition to media workers in Africa and to organize these workers. The meeting brought together unions from several African countries and as the discussions took place, it could be seen that media workers face similar problems throughout the continent. There are several existing collective agreements in different countries, for example, but they are not applied properly or at all in some cases.



One theme for the campaign is the social responsibility of media companies. To promote this topic the working group will be working on developing a label (MARS) to be granted to media companies which conduct their business in a manner that respects the rights of workers.



The working group established a steering committee to lead the work. The meeting ended with a press conference where the working group released a statement concerning the aims of the campaign. The statement can be found at the top of this article in “related files” in English and in French.
