UNI Africa hosts 300 unionists in Tunisia to fight for workers’ rights

UNI Africa will bring together about 300 activists to build the union movement across the continent and enforce international work that many unions have already started.
The 2nd UNI Africa Conference will be an opportunity for unions to plan for the future as they build stronger unions, work together for union rights at multinationals and look at the union role in meeting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and fight HIV and AIDS in the workplace.
UNI Global Union, which represents 20 million workers around the world and 1 million workers in Africa, is in talks with various multinationals to get Global Agreements, which would ensure basic rights for the companies’ employees no matter where they work and ensure that all employees have the right to join a union.
One of the top targets for a global agreement in Africa is Shoprite Checkers, a major retailer headquartered in South Africa. UNI Africa unions are planning a special message to send to Shoprite management from the conference.
UNI Africa’s Tunisian unions, the General Banking and Insurance Federation (FGBEF), General Professional and Service Federation (FGPS) for the property graphical sectors, General Postal and Telecommunications Federation (FGPTT), Federation of Education Workers (SGECE), and the Federation of Tourism, Food and Commercial Workers (FGTAA) are hosting their colleagues from May 11-13 in Hammamet.
UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings will welcome participants on Monday afternoon. General Secretary of the General Tunisian Workers’ Union (UGTT) Abdessalem Jerad and Minister of Social Affairs Ali Chaoauch are expected to address the participants at the opening ceremony.
Representatives from the International Labour Organisation, the Central Bank of Tunisia and the Postal and Telecommunications Ministry are also expected.
The conference is being held at Le Royal Hotel, Hammamet from May 11-13. Press are invited to attend and encouraged to arrive at 2 pm on Monday, May 11 for the opening ceremony.
