On Tuesday 30 June, Tesco had been called before the UK Joint Committee on Human Rights following evidence given to the committee by the UFCW about its anti-union practices in the USA.



The Joint Committee on Human Rights consists of twelve members appointed from both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.



During the hearing Tesco refused to answer the question whether the union was allowed to recruit on the shop floor as they are in the UK. They said they would want to verify their information and get back to the committee on this.



The also failed to answer to the question on whether the US management will meet the union in order to discuss neutrality as stated on their global policies. Instead they said that the workers could always raise any issues with management and that they take very good care of their workers. Tesco also referred to their internal complaints procedure which deals with complaints anonymously.



Tesco confirmed that no one would be fired for being a union member.
