In February, the CWU submitted a claim to BT for a 5% increase on current salaries.



BT responded with a 'final' offer of 2% and two non-consolidated, non-pensionable £250 payments, the second of which is dependent on meeting undisclosed end of year targets.



The CWU rejected the final offer because it represents a cut in members' pay in real terms and does not reflect the contribution they make to the business.



The company's latest results show that an improved offer is affordable for the company, with profits up 11% in the third quarter of 2009 and cost savings of £1.6bn in the first nine months of the year. The CWU, which represents around 50,000 of BT’s 86,000 employees, says its members helped BT save around £1.6 billion in 2009 and that these savings are being reflected in profits which should now be properly shared with workers.



The CWU Telecom Executive has agreed to prepare to ballot BT members for industrial action.
