Transparency of disbursement of tax revenues on public spending has to be stepped up as there is an increasing tendency to raise taxes on consumption by governments. Increasing GST, VAT and import duties on consumer goods hits badly on the wage earners in society; contrarily there is generous tax concessions to the privileged sections as incentives;  said Dr Lalithasiri Gunaruwan, Senior Lecturer on Economics University of Colombo speaking at the First UNI Sri Lanka Affiliates Councils Conference.  Dr Gunaruwan proposed that trade unions to lobby the government to improve transparency and accountabilities of sources and uses of direct and indirect taxes. He suggested that revealing this information need to be made compulsory through an act of parliament; in his keynote speech to the conference.

Gayan Munaweera was elected as the President together with Upali Dissanayaka and Haripriya Hettiarchchi as UNI SLAC Secretary and Treasurer respectively at the conference.
