The General Secretaries of Italian affiliates demand that the bank reconsiders its strategy and  does not impose more sacrifice on workers.

UNICREDIT has presented 14 billion € losses as a result of their operations in 2013, and as part of the strategy to recover from this situation, they announced  layoffs, which will affect 8.500 workers, mostly in Italy, Austria and Germany.

Trade unions strongly criticized this strategy and asked UNICREDIT to reconsider these layoffs, highlighting the fact that workers were not responsible for these losses. “In the past workers have paid the price, now it is time to ask the shareholders and management to take their responsibility”, said Lucia Peveri the UNI Expert at the UNICREDIT EWC.

The declaration of General Secretaries goes in the same direction and they demand that “the company addresses who was responsible for bringing this situation about, who is responsible for managing the current situation in this way and who is responsible for dumping the problem on the employees hands as well as cutting jobs as a solution, as we can see from the business plan presented in conjunction with the operating results”.

They also highlighted that they hoped “the dividend, which in any case was expected, is not just a way of keeping the shareholders happy while the company's employees are harshly penalised. And, at some point, society will see how much money the managers will dare to award themselves for the loss they have chalked up”.
