A multitudinous and enthusiastic public demonstration mobilized to commemorate May First in Panama. This year the union centrals decided to put aside their differences to jointly carry out public demonstrations against the government of businessman Ricardo Martinelli that does not cease attacking the interests of men and women workers and of the people in general. UNI was there to add its voice and its presence.

The voices of the demonstrators vindicated the right of Panamanian workers to decent work. The cost of life, and especially food, and public transportation has not stopped increasing, dramatically affecting the standard of living of the people. Demonstrators raised their voice against the abuses unions are experiencing, and the violations of historical acquired rights, as well as the ongoing attacks against social security. “Panamanian union readers do not want to pay the piper for the financial crisis,” said Adriana Rosenzvaig, UNI. “Panamanian workers have the right to decent work and to this end the government must respect the union rights that are being trampled.”

One single voice: The people will never be defeated. And the collective conviction that without struggle there is no victory.
