UNI affiliate SINTETEL Brazil has announced a deal with Spanish telecom multinational Telefonica to allow for voluntary layoffs of some 1500 workers. The company had originally flagged more layoffs but this was reduced after unions intervened.



The job cuts are equivalent to about 8 percent of the operator's total workforce of 18,885 as of December 2011.



The union said employees can apply for a voluntary redundancy program between 12 and 14 March.
