42 people lost their lives, 40 workers were injured seriously and 10 workers are still missing due to a tragic fire accident on 10 September 2016 at Tampaco Foils Limited in Bangladesh.
Primary findings show that the fire was caused due to an explosion in the factory but until now the causes of explosion have not been identified. The structure of the factory building was completely unsuitable for industrial production and the building was full of flammable materials and had only one exit.
Tampaco Foils Ltd is one of leading companies involved in the field of Flexible and Tobacco Packaging in Bangladesh. Customers include British American Tobacco Bangladesh Ltd., Nestle Bangladesh Ltd., Universal Foods Ltd. and more.
Bangladesh Free Trade Unions Congress (BFTUC) together with ANROEV and OSHE Foundation has helped the injured workers and victim families form the Tampaco Fire Accident victims Right Network (TFVRN) to represent the collective voice and demands of accident victims. However, the multinational companies which bought their material from Tampaco have failed to take any responsibility so far.
BFTUC requests all our affiliates for their solidarity and support to force these companies, especially Nestle and British American Tobacco, to compensate the victims and provide them with medical support.
