Telkom workers from two South African communication industry trade unions - Communication Workers Union (CWU) and South African Communications Union (SACU) - will go on strike from August 1 to 5.



The unions wanted a 12.5 percent increase for the year from April 2008 to March 2009 and another increase of 8.7 percent for between January and March this year as well as medical aid benefits and standby allowances.



Telkom refused to accept demands as presented by the two unions on several occasions including on 28 July 2008 at a meeting held between the parties. The third union in the company, Trade Union Solidarity, earlier this month accepted an average wage increase of 10,5% for its 4 000 members at Telkom.
