In reaction to the dispute with by the employees at the SPAR shop in Dättwil, management has dismissed all employees after they exercised their constitutional right to strike for better working conditions.
The employees had requested that management increase staffing levels in order to end the regular use of forced overtime as well an increase of wages.
SPAR management is Switzerland did not recognise the employees' concerns and categorically refused to negotiate on staffing and wages. Faced with this refusal the employees decided on Monday 3 June to go on strike. SPAR management reacted by threatening the strikers with immediate dismissal should they not return to work.
Since the beginning of the strike on 3 June, the employees and their union Unia have submitted several proposals to management to resolve the issues. But SPAR management refuse to negotiate and instead continue to threaten and intimidate their employees.
SPAR management finally agreed to negotiations on 11 June. But after six hours of negotiations where progress had been made, management left the negotiation table without any explanations and without a date for continuation of the talks.
Instead, management obtained a court order to remove the picket line and has dismissed all employees of this store.
UNI has written to SPAR International and called on global management to convince the management of SPAR Switzerland to enter into constructive negotiations with the union in order to prevent further damage to the SPAR brand.
UNI Commerce affiliates around the world are standing in solidarity with the striking workers at SPAR Dägenswil.
The employees and their union Unia remain open for continued negotiations. They are convinced that only in talks a solution to the conflict can be found. But until these talks are finalised they will continue their strike actions.
