AIBOBEF India has adopted the "Breaking Through" policy and made tremendous efforts for women’s voices to be heard and especially to combat gender-based violence and harassment.
This move by AIBOBEF is in line with achieving 40% women representation, a goal adopted unanimously at the 3rd UNI World Congress in Nagasaki, Japan.
Now for the very first time, a woman sits the post of 'Organizing Secretary'. AIBOBEF’s Mumbai Unit, one of the largest ones in India, has increased considerable seats for women representatives. The recently-formed team includes fresh hands as well as experienced unionists.
The number of women representatives in the Central Executive Committee have increased since 2010. AIBOBEF's efforts to increase women's representation has not stopped. The AIBOBEF’s General Body Meeting, held in Mumbai, January 12, created an additional post of Joint Secretary for women in each region. This means that 6 more ladies will join the team. It was also passed that between the 2 Deputy General Secretaries posts, one will be given to a woman.
The recent brutal rape of a 23 year old medical student in Delhi and other forms of gender violence were condemned at the outset of AIBOBEF’s General Body Meeting. The meeting stressed on the need for social security for women. AIBOBEF will be a part of the freedom of women program which will be conducted on 14 February 2013.
UNI Apro would like to congratulate AIBOBEF, its General Secretary, Bro. Milind Nadkarni, and Sis. Sharada for the excellent achievements in increasing women's representation. Bro. Milind is also the President of UNI ILC, whose foresight and leadership has made the empowerment and increase of women representation possible.
