Standardize Benefits for Government Linked Companies in Malaysia
Malaysian Prime Minister Mohd Najib Tun Razak met up with UNI MLC and GLC union leaders at the Parliament House, Kuala Lumpur on 9 April 2012 to discuss on standardised retirement age and pension rates for ex- civil servants in government linked companies (GLC). GLC employees are currently not entitled to the same terms of employment protection legislation as those working under the public sector. UNI MLC stated that this was unfair to GLC employees and pensioners as they joined the companies as pioneers before privatisation and should receive equal benefits. The team of UNI MLC and GLC union delegates have proposed to increase retirement age to 60 years old which will be consistent with the public sector. Delegates also called for a review of pension rates in view of rising costs of living. Many GLC retirees are currently only entitled to RM200/month, a far cry from RM750, the minimum pension rate in the public sector. On promotion and recruitment for top managerial positions, delegates urged the Malaysian government to groom and promote long serving employees instead of hiring new staff to fill top positions. This will not only facilitate industrial harmony but also recognize the services of experienced and long serving staff. PM Razak welcomed the information and suggestions presented and promised to review and take necessary action. Other issues raised include job security and business viability after the share swap between Malaysia Airline and Air Asia, as well as National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) grievances against Maybank. PM Razak said that he had been misled about the formation of Maybank’s in-house union and was glad to understand the situation. Mohammed Shafie BP Mammal, President of UNI MLC, said he was glad that the PM was able to make time for unions despite being busy with upcoming elections. The meeting served as a social dialogue with top management but was important as the Prime Minister was able to address concerns directly. The UNI MLC delegates consisted of Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal (UNI MLC), Abu Hussin Bin Nekmat (KPPPNB), Suffian Bin Unoss (Union of Pos Malaysia Uniformed Staff), Mohd Roszeli Bin Majid (MTUC and Tenaga National Berhad Junior Officers Union), Khairuzzaman Bin Mohammad (TV3 Malaysia Employees Union), Abdul Razak Bin Md. Hassan (Railway Union of Malaysia), Mohd Effendy Bin Abdul Ghani (Union Of Pos Malaysia Clerical Workers), Alias Bin Aziz (MAS), J.Solomon (NUBE) and Haji Mohd Ibrahim Bin Haji Hamid (UTES).
