Union Learning Reps (ULR) have been running a Learning project at the site for the past 6 years where many people have been able to gain Skills for Life and gain qualifications. Whilst it has taken some time to sign the agreement, FoC Gary Seager has recognised that the current state of manufacturing has thrown up many problems for members in work and those who are losing their jobs.

The ULRs set up a Redundancy Support Steering Group with the company and have been involved in monitoring and developing the learning opportunities to people affected by redundancy. There have been 7 Union Learning Reps working on the project and they have split into working groups. Each group concentrates on a different aspect to make sure the best possible support and information is available on job search, for Learning and Training, and general advice.

Lead Unite ULR, Gary Seager, has been tasked with arranging the steering groups and communication to management. He said: “The group monitor the quality of any learning or advice given and through canvassing people, to ask what support they need, we make sure everyone receives as much support as possible through this very difficult time.”

“The signing of this agreement reinforces the work already being carried out in St Regis. It gives the ULRs the basis to develop new opportunities for everyone to benefit from.”

Lee Glover, the Mill manager, added: “I am very pleased with all the work carried out in the past. People who have had real skills for life needs, have found it very comfortable speaking to the ULR and have been happy to attend courses on site.”
