Springtime in e-commerce: time for Congress to strengthen the Postal recovery

Since 2011 the US Postal Service is facing a striking new opportunity with e-commerce parcel traffic surging ahead. Congress needs to change its strategy first defined in 2011 from a "shrink to survive" to a " commit to a valuable asset" strategy says the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC).
Postal Services are facing a renewed opportunity to grow their services and invest in a strong Post as e-commerce is a booming business. This entails investment in technology and training for Postal services to serve their clients in a fast and efficient way.
The NALC reacted to an April 8 hearing by the the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has responsibility for reviewing Government spending, such as in Postal Services. The hearing was about the President’s Fiscal Year 2015 Budget Proposal for the Postal Service, whereby the Obama administration's proposals are still about shrinking the Post to survive. On the contrary the NACL believes Postal businesses can now move on to a bright future as e-commerce is booming. It is pushing forward the message that the strategies for Postal Services are now totally outdated and that the Congress' plan should be to invest in Post. NACL President Fredric Ronaldo said :
"It’s time to move forward with innovative solutions that allow the Postal Service to evolve and use its established network to serve the nation’s communication and e-commerce needs. It’s time to discuss how to position the Postal Service to build successful partnerships with more American businesses, like Amazon has in moving toward seven-day delivery. It’s no longer 2009. Now it’s time for Congress to strengthen the postal recovery, not cripple the Postal Service with even more destructive service and job cuts."
Stephen DeMatteo, Head of UNI Post&Logistics, the global union representing more than 2.5 million members in the postal and logistics industry worldwide, said "UNI global union totally supports this approach resolutely turned towards innovation using the postal network as an efficient springboard for e-commerce. Congress should take note that is is Springtime for Post".
