The request for review joins a recent appeal filed by the South Africa Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU).



“This story is not over in South Africa,” said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings.

“We stand in solidarity with SACCAWU and the global alliance of unions that are holding Walmart to account all over the world.”



On Wednesday the Economic Development Minister, Trade and Industry Minister and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister filed the government's appeal, saying that the procedures during the proceedings were unfair. Walmart was not required to provide critical documents to those contesting the deal which would have allowed them to build a stronger case for local procurement requirements.

The Competition Appeal Court will set a date for a hearing on the deal.



Along with the appeals filed against the Competition Tribunal decision, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Economic Development started public hearings on the deal earlier this week.
