MTN Group plans to save up to 170 million rand (equivalent to USD23 million) a year by cutting 7% of its permanent workforce in South Africa, and losing about half its temporary workers.



The company blames the global recession for a decrease in consumer spending and a drop in customer sign-ups, which it says have led to these cuts. About 403 permanent jobs may be cut from the company's 4,679 staff, along with around 1,500 of the 3,000 contract workers MTN employs.



The job cuts are expected to be concluded by March 2010.
