ITF Maritime Co-ordinator Stephen Cotton visited Istanbul on 26 July and met with leaders of ITF-affiliate Tumtis to discuss the sacking of warehouse workers by DHL Turkey.

Tumtis, which organises workers in DHL Turkey, is engaged in a dispute with the company over the sackings, which appear to be an anti-union move. It has met resistance from local management. Last week the ITF and UNI global union made several proposals to the global delivery giant to facilitate talks between DHL Turkey and Tumtis.



Cotton, speaking at the picket line, called upon DHL Turkey management to put an end to the harassment of union activists and to enter into dialogue with Tumtis to resolve this matter.



Commenting on the developments in Turkey, ITF general secretary David Cockroft said: "The situation in DHL Turkey looks worrying. Around 25 workers have been sacked from several warehouses in what appears to be anti-union action. Tumtis has a strong track record of winning workers rights in the global delivery sector, supported by the international union family."



Ingo Marowsky, ITF global delivery coordinator, added: "ITF and UNI, together with Tumtis, are trying hard to de-escalate this looming dispute. But time is running out, and there had better be some progress made. Tumtis is part of a global network of unions in this sector which is watching developments very closely, ready to stand by Tumtis."
