Mexico DF. On July 30th, 2010 SITAG, the Industrial Union of Graphic Arts Workers of the Mexican Republic, carried out a seminar on equal opportunities and against discrimination It was attended by 39 participants, 32 women and 7 men from the graphic sector coming from Toluca, Querétaro and DF. Female colleagues presented their demands and necessities, reaffirming their commitment with the union and their unyielding will to work for its reinforcement, and to achieve the incorporation of their demands in the union’s daily agenda.
The work groups coincided in a common demand, which arose spontaneously, which had to do with the necessity of taking immediate action against sexual harassment.
The International Secretary of the SITAG, colleague Porfirio Cruz, responded to this demand right away, assuming the union’s responsibility to immediately start with campaigns against sexual harassment, and the first step of this campaign will be to ask employers to place notices in all the plants saying: “sexual harassment is forbidden here. In case you are harassed denounce it to the union”. The second step will be to introduce a specific article in collective agreements, which enables to denounce those companies opposing this rule.
As a result of a request of SITAG’s female colleagues, a process of training and information will be developed, starting with the dissemination of the collective agreement and labour laws.
The journey was concluded in an atmosphere of solidarity and commitment and with the conviction that the union belongs to everybody; that equal opportunities are achieved by breaking through cultural barriers, and conquering spaces of representation where union policies are elaborated.
