THE Labour Court in Tanzania has ordered Shoprite to resume negotiations with UNI affiliate, the Tanzania Union of Industrial & commercial Workers (TUICO).

The court order follows TUICO appeal to the Committee for Mediation and Arbitration after Shoprite terminated negotiations for wage increase and declared a deadlock.

TUICO has suspended planned strikes in five Shoprite stores to give a chance to negotiations which starts on 29 July. The Labour Court will chair the negotiations.

And UNI Global Unions has written to Shoprite urging the company to resume negotiations.

"We are disappointed to learn that a company such as Shoprite is failing to respect union rights and has refused to return to the negotiations table," says UNI General secretary Philip Jennings. "The action taken by your company goes against ILO Convention 98 on the Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining."

"The Tanzanian Labour Court has ordered Shoprite to resume negotiations with TUICO on July 29th, therefore, we urge you to return to the negotiation table with an open mind and to bargain in good faith."
