This will essentially mean the closing down of several TV channels and radio stations and putting in jeopardy numerous jobs as well as ERT’s function as a public service provider.

The Minister of State, Mr. Mosialos, has announced that the ET1, the country’s oldest TV channel will be closed together with two digitally transmitted channels, with the plan of transferring some of the programmes to other channels. In addition to these cuts several radio stations will be closed and further stations merged. These actions will seriously impact the range of quality programmes available to the Greek people regarding entertainment, culture and sports, and contain no vision of the role and value of public service broadcasting in the future information society.

UNI MEI calls on the Greek government to abandon these plans and enter into a dialogue with ERT, its workforce and unions as well as all other relevant stakeholders to devise a plan that will the ensure the economic and cultural sustainability of public service broadcasting in the digital economy.
