The predicted job cuts takes place in a broader context of job losses in investment banking in a response to the credit crunch.



Merrill Lynch will cut 4,000 jobs after its $2bn loss in the first quarter while JPMorgan Chase is expected to eliminate a majority of Bear Stearns' 14,000 jobs.



The Centre for Economics and Business Research has predicted 11,000 job losses in London this year.
