Romanian Postal Trade Union to Fight Privatisation
The Romanian Ministry for Information Society (MSI) announced the privatisation of 51% of the Romanian post through share capital increase. The call for tender has been published end of February and will be open until May for interested companies. In consequence to be more attractive for foreign investors, postal management announced layoffs and wage cuts. “The Romanian Post faces very difficult economic times”, says Matei Bratianu, president of the Romanian Post and Communication Union, FSPC, “these are caused by the economic crisis on the one hand and the excessive influence of politicians on the other hand and leaded to the need of a re-capitalisation. But to sell state owned companies with all the consequences is very short sighted. In our opinion the solution is maintaining the state ownership but replacing the management and becoming more professional with more needed skills and competences to rule such a big company.”
In reaction to this announcement the Romanian postal Trade Union FSPC organised protests across the country and concluded their activities for now with a big demonstration in Bucharest. More than 2000 postal workers participated at this event. The colleagues from FSPC demanded the immediate resignation of Minister Dan Nica and the postal management as reaction on the announced and bad prepared privatisation plans. Management asked for the participation list of this demonstration and underlines like this their ignorance for social labour or human rights. The Trade Union is especially worried about the maintenance of quality services in rural areas as management already announced the reduction of workers in this site. This would isolate people even more, cut off communication possibilities and restrict democratic and human rights on the country side.
The trade unions response to management's abuse and investigation on those workers who participated at the big demonstration, was to organize in February 28 other pickets protest in all counties of Romania and in Bucharest front of the Romanian Post National Company, where trade unionists cover their faces with hoods or masks as a protest against bureaucratic methods to investigate the participants of the big demonstration held on February 12.
The Romanian Postal Trade Union FSPC affiliated to UNI Europa Post & Logistics informed the UNI Europa Post & Logistics Committee about the current situation and the struggle to keep the number and the quality of employment and postal services in Romania. The Committee passed a solidarity message on the 21st February 2013 in Luxembourg and expressed their full support of the colleagues from FSPC.
