‘Robin Hood’ driver distributes to the poor money guarded by Prosegur
The incredible story of security company Prosegur `Robin Hood’ driver Daniel González, hits national news wires in Paraguay and goes viral. Employed by Spanish multinational Security Company Prosegur, Daniel has admitted stealing the money to give it to the poor and said that the company “tortures its employees with its bad working conditions.” He insisted that his colleagues are right to protest yet their voices go unheard. He says workers are in the vehicles for 2-3 hours in the heat, work 12, 15 and 18 hours for only 2'500 Paraguayan Guaraní which is equivalent of 60 cents in US dollars. He went on to say " I robbed the thief". He was sorry about what happened but was prompted to do so to display into public eyes the things that are going terribly wrong at Prosegur.
His case is attracting attention everywhere, symbolic of the poor wages and conditions that Security Guards are expected to work under whilst guarding wealth and valuables that they have no prospect of earning despite the importance of their job and the risks they face.
Alice Dale, Director of Property Services for UNI referred to the campaigns by Prosegur workers to form their unions in the face of opposition from the company said, "UNI and its affiliates stand with these security guards in Peru who have taken the bold and important step this week to improve their lives by forming a union. Prosegur needs to understand that it will be held accountable for its actions toward the security guards whose work makes the company what it is today. Whether in Peru or Paraguay, where the struggle continues, or elsewhere, workers will demand a fair and just workplace. "
Prosegur is one of the main multinational companies in the private security industry, with more than 155,000 workers, present in 17 countries in 3 continents –Asia, Europe and Latin America. Yet here are the 10 most shocking facts of Prosegur labour malpractices that should no longer be tolerated:
