Registration opens for UNI's 4th World Congress/Indaba!

Registration is now underway for the UNI Global Union World Congress, 7-10 December!
UNI affiliates may register by following the link to the dedicated Congress website: www.uniworldcongress.org
The main theme of the Congress is “Including You! Ubuntu!”
UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings said, “Including You/Ubuntu is about inclusive economic growth, including our unions and everyone who lives in the countries and communities where we are active. We welcome all members of the UNI family to join us in Cape Town in December.”
It is not a coincidence that UNI Global Union chose to hold its 4th World Congress in Cape Town. The choice of South Africa was made with the idea of being able to celebrate together with the people the 20th anniversary of the democratic breakthrough in the country. UNI has a strong and influential presence in South Africa. The UNI Johannesburg office is one of the hubs of the organisation’s activities throughout Africa.
Sessions of Congress will focus on the following themes:
Including you to win union growth
• Union organising and recruitment strategies
• Global agreements and global alliances with companies
• Corporate responsibility and human rights
• Smart leverage strategies
Including you in taking back our economies
This theme will explore the state of the global economy in relation to the on-going financial crisis and the importance of building an economic system which includes you for sustainable growth.
Including you in a new world of work
• Developing strong and innovative unions
• Putting quality jobs at the heart of a new deal for workers
• Driving a new economy for societal well-being
A special session will focus on Africa’s economic future and the fight for freedom and democracy. 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of freedom and democracy in South Africa. The country’s history is one of struggle and sacrifice for emancipation, freedom and justice. Nelson Mandela’s book aptly describes the South African struggle as: “The long walk to freedom.” It is a journey that African people continue to walk as they struggle for peace, democracy and freedom. From the Arab Spring of 2011 to the Occupy Wall Street movement, we see a continuation of that journey in search of power to the people.
In UNI Global Union’s 2010 World Congress in Nagasaki, members endorsed UNI’s Breaking Though strategy for Union Growth. The aim of Breaking Through is to grow and strengthen affiliated unions and UNI Global Union to improve the working conditions and lives of workers in the services and allied sectors. UNI has now signed 51 global agreements with multinationals aimed at improving working conditions, unionisation and ensuring that companies act responsibly in line with the Ruggie Principles.
Breaking Through has become part of the DNA of the organisation and will continue past Cape Town towards the 5th UNI World Congress in Liverpool in 2018.
For logistical reasons, we request all participants to register on www.uniworldcongress.org for the Congress before 30 June 2014.
