Unions from all across Europe came together in Rome on 7-8 April to discuss the issue of organising and reaching out to atypical workers. The workshop was the final workshop in the joint EU project of UNI MEI, FIA, FIM and EFJ, focusing on atypical workers.

The participants discussed issues such as new innovative strategies to reach atypical workers, reaching out to young and female workers, strategic litigation as a way of campaigning, and building partnerships to overcome challenging environments. Many unions are researching the issue of what workers want from unions and what unions need to offer to attract new members. This has led to innovations and new services such as peer-to-peer advising services, and to campaigns reaching out to specific groups such as young workers or women. The different legal systems in different countries create a variety of problems for atypical workers, so the issue of strategic litigation was looked into to discuss the benefits of pursuing a court ruling on for instance concerning the right to collective bargaining.

The project is now drawing to a close, with the final conference taking place in Brussels on 8-9 September.
