Jennings, in a rousing call for unionists to lead a new positive revolution, took the Arab Spring as proof of what can be achieved. We are part of a worldwide people’s revolution – a revolution of positive action. Jennings said that is why UNI supports Palestine’s application for membership of the UN. This is a logical extension of two states living side by side. In this new world in the region we call for real negotiations to reach a lasting settlement.
Turning his sights on the G20, Jennings said he will take a powerful message of indignation to the G20 in Cannes next month, “It is time for the G20 leaders to get off their backsides and put a plan together to get people back to work.”
Jennings said the French are always great mobilises and now they must reclaim the values of Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité and do away with the warped global values of Intolerance, Inegalité, Individualité.
He said the EU’s six new rules on economic governance are largely empty of promise. He said that the so-called “Six Pack” would lead to more austerity and take us further down the path to a full scale depression. He said the only saving grace is the clause safeguarding our collective bargaining agreements.
Jennings told the delegates that all the members of UNI Global Union are committed to working together in the spirit of solidarity to finding solutions to the crisis. European and global union cooperation is key.
“Our unions in Asia, the Americas and Africa see we are in this together and this is the only way out”, he said.
He praised UNI Europa for having the ideas to deal with the crisis in a socially responsible way, from better financial regulation to the push for a fair wage, new instruments, new institutions and Eurobonds.
Finally he urged all present to become part of the new revolution and push for justice for workers.
