This week, the International Labour Organization (ILO) decided to suspend the private security company Prosegur, from its SCORE programme in Colombia. The suspension by the ILO follows a number of complaints about human and labour rights abuses by Prosegur in Colombia and Peru. The concerns raised by local union Sintravalores and UNI were shown to be legitimate when last week a Prosegur union leader in Neiva, Colombia was punched in his mouth by the Head of Security inside the company’s premises.

SCORE is an ILO programme that seeks to promote corporate social responsibility and good labour relations between companies and workers. According to the ILO, “To obtain satisfactory results in the implementation of the SCORE methodology, a labour climate that favours conditions of dialogue and cooperation in the workplace is required”.

The ILO states that Prosegur in Colombia, “doesn’t present the ideal conditions to continue working in a methodology based on cooperation and dialogue”.

UNI Global Union, CUT of Colombia and Sintravalores welcome the ILO’s decision.

The International Relations Secretary of CUT of Colombia, Diógenes Orjuela said that, “This behavior by Prosegur can’t keep going on. The position of the ILO shows that their anti-union practices are not acceptable.”

Adriana Rosenzvaig, Regional Secretary of UNI Américas said that, “The ILO’s message is clear. Prosegur needs to get its house in order”.
