Promoting social dialogue in audiovisual media companies

Following a two-year project involving workers from major European audiovisual media companies, the trade unions in the European media sector issue a guide to assist workers and unions in building a good information, consultation and participation culture in European Works Councils.
The guide comes in form of a short e-leaflet and aim at serving as basis for cooperation among workers and trade unions across countries and companies to improve social dialogue in companies of the audiovisual sector. It is a practical aid for workers and trade union representatives, who are seeking to set-up, renegotiate and further develop the structure and functioning of European Works Councils.
This project carried out by the Media, Entertainment & Arts Sector of UNI Europa (EURO-MEI) bringing together more than 60 unions representing more than 150 000 entertainment was co-funded by the Directorate General of Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion of the European Commission. In the framework of this project, UNI Europa organised training workshops for workers’ and trade union representatives on setting-up and functioning of national information consultation and participation bodies on EU law on transnational employee involvement. We have provided training material to workers and trade union representatives in the audiovisual sector to raise awareness about the information, consultation and participation rights. A European seminar on good practices regarding the implementation of information, consultation and participation rights at national and transnational level was organised for trade unions from EU member states and provided for an exchange with representatives of management of key multinational companies. The negotiation and renegotiation of EWC agreements in a number of commercial audiovisual media companies were launched. To sustain and support this process, a network of works council and trade union members in the audiovisual sector was set-up.
Work council members and trade union representatives who participated in this project have collaborated to elaborate the common guidelines. They want to improve cross-border social dialogue in companies and across the media sector and to strengthen the link between European and national work councils.
