Professional Engineers Soften Ground to form a Union in N Cell NEPAL

![]() N Cell Employees Trade Union leaders thanked UNI Nepal Liaison Council's initiative to encourage Engineers to support trade unions in new mobile telecommunication companies through its Professional & Managerial Staff committee. "If not for the awareness created among young engineers at the UNI P&MS network meeting held in 2009 in Kathmandu, it would not have been possible to form the union in Spice Telecom in Nepal" said Prakash Boral at the P&MS interaction meeting held on the 16 October 2011, in Kathmandu, Nepal. Boral said since formation of the union they have signed two collective agreements in the company a subsidiary of Telia Sonera. Jayasri Priyalal UNI Apro Director for P&MS activities shared his experiences in respect of the challenges faced by the Professionals with the advent of the global financial crisis and Asia becoming engine of growth. Priyalal said that at the 3rd UNI Apro Regional Conference held in Manila, Philippines a resolution was adopted to strengthening the voice of P&MS and supporting them to secure decent work. He further said that P&MS needs trade unions and Unions too need P&MS to arrest the corporate greed and deteriorating ethical standards in business. UNI Nepal liaison council organized the interactive meeting for their members in UNI NLC P&MS committee. Engineer Shaligram Parajuli coordinator of the UNI NLC P&MS committee solicited assistance and support from UNI Apro for Capacity Building and to update the professionals in Nepal about the new industrial relation systems in the competitive global markets. During the interactive meeting participants were keen to know how UNI Apro is promoting the concept of partnership with management and trade unions for sustainable business growth in the region, Engineers expressed their concerns as less opportunities for them to advance their careers at present as many companies have cut down on their training and development activities. Rajendra Acharaya Director for UNI DOC Nepal shared his experiences that UNI supports P&MS to upgrade and update their skills through organizing exclusive forums at regional and global level. He also highlighted on various schemes UNI has introduces such as UNI Passport to extend the increasing number of professionals who are migrating across the globe. ![]() |
