RR Donnelley, Chicago, says it won a multi-year $100 million contract expansion with Cornerstone Brands, in part because of its Variable Trim Binding (VTB) capability introduced earlier this year.

VTB allows for multiple sized products from multiple customers to be bound in-line in a single operation and packaged for co-mailing, reducing trim size and page-count barriers to alignment of different sized products. Head-to-foot and side-to-side dimensions can vary by up to one inch in either direction. The process increases the number of products and customers who can qualify for postal savings.

Quebecor World, Montreal, announced earlier this month the installation of a Variable Trim Co-Mail solution. The printer will use variable trim and hybrid co-mail technologies to increase its comail offering to catalog and peridical customers. In May, Quad/Graphics announced its IntelliTrim offering would be rolled out company wide, after it had co-mailed 1 billion catalogs. Joel Quadracci said it could triple the co-mail opportunities for customers, and allows for a 100-page variation in thickness from one item to the next.
