The transposition of the recast European Directive on European Works Councils (EWC) into the national law of EU member states has to be completed by June 2011.



In many countries, this process is now on the way. Portugal has even completed its transposition. The new Portuguese EWC legislation can be found at http://dre.pt/pdf1sdip/2009/09/17100/0586105867.pdf (in Portuguese only).



In the United Kingdom, a public consultation on the draft transposition has been launched by the British Government. The draft transposition that has been presented would set the lowest possible standards and has raised concerns that it will even undermine the European provisions. Until February 12, there is still a chance to protest and demand higher standards.
