UNI Africa Commerce affiliate SACCAWU from South Africa submitted their demands for a new collective agreement in December 2009, respecting the deadline for entering into negotiations with Pick'N'Pay. The current dispute that has caught the interest of several media outlets has been running since the company didn't respond to the claims submitted by SACCAWU in December 2009. The claims should have been be implemented from March 2010.



One of the outstanding structural issues faced by workers in Pick'N'Pay is a salary regime which has its roots back in the apartheid times and therefore, SACCAWU asks for the company to gradually change its salary policies. While very generous pay increases have been given to management and those not in the bargaining unit, SACCAWU members have been given offers which would lock wages to the inflation rate after a minor one-off increase. On an important topic like guaranteed minimum number of working hours per month the company has not even given an offer, while SACCAWU asks for a guaranteed 120 hours per month.
