Contrary to previous plans the officiating CEO of AIR & Doordarshan, a nominated member of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the board of Broadcasting Corp, India, is proposing to privatize the new services and is planning to offer the work related to establishing these services to outside contractors. In addition an existing service which is currently free of charge will be sold to a private operator, which will make it a paid service. All this work could be done by the employees of AIR & Doordarshan, and this would even be the more economical option. An additional plan is to outsource the majority of current vacancies. Together these actions will jeopardize numerous jobs as well as the relationship between the employees and AIR & Doordarshan. When the employees’ associations objected to these proposed actions, the CEO declared that the associations will not be recognized anymore within AIR & Doordarshan and ordered 25 office bearers of these associations to be transferred from the central and regional headquarters to remote locations.

UNI MEI calls on the AIR & Doordarshan to immediately restore the rights of the employees’ associations and urges the management to enter into discussions with them to solve these issues together with the employees.
