On 10 January 2010, the management of Orange Cameroon took action against workers who participated in a strike in mid-December 2009, and, in particular, against trade union delegates. This action included requests for explanations, withholding of wages and formal disciplinary procedures.



The local union, SYNACOM, says that the actions taken by Orange management contravene national laws in Cameroon regarding the collective settlement of labour disputes.



UNI and France Telecom entered into a global agreement by which the company guarantees to protect certain fundamental labour rights including freedom of association and collective bargaining, which appear to be breached in this matter.



UNI and French unions CFDT, CGT and FO have called on the company, demanding retraction of the retaliatory action which is instilling fear and intimidation, preventing workers from freely exercising their rights in the workplace.
