Online rights and Web 2.0

Major progress was made to update the UNI Code Online Right at a meeting on online rights and Web 2.0 on 5-6 March, held in Vienna. This was a small meeting with just about 20 participants from the UNI Europa P&MS Steering Committee and a few guests.

Wolfgang Katzian, President of UNI affiliate GPA-djp, opened the meeting and welcomed participants to Vienna. He said that his union has had very good experience and results in reaching out online to professionals and mangers, through their “interest group work@professional”.

The meeting was a follow up to the Tallinn Conference held in December last year. Three products produced by the project were reviewed and approved for publication:
  1. Web 2.0 video
  2. Surveillance in Cyberspace by Christiane Ferral-Schuhl (E, F, G, ES)
  3. Online Rights and Industrial Relations, Andrew Bibby (E, F, G, ES)



These products are intended to raise awareness among UNI affiliates about the risks and opportunities of Web 2.0 communication tools and also feed into the education and training for trade union officers and members of UNI affiliates.

Following highly interesting interventions by GPA Web 2.0 experts Christian Voigt and Thomas Kreiml, the meeting started to re-drafting of the UNI Online Rights Code online. A Wiki and a blog were set up, where the old Code was posted and open for comments and amendments. A group was intensively working on re-drafting the code and almost finished the job.

Participants were actively engaged in the proceedings in Vienna and found the meeting very instructive. Everybody has learned a lot about the use of Web 2.0 applications, mainly Blogging and Wikis.

This will certainly led to changes in the communications of some of our affiliates.

The project was financed by the EU Commission. Now, at the end of the project, the budget allowed only for a relatively small meeting.

Participants said that UNI should lead by example and pave the path for trade unions into a new era of online communication.
