As part of the Global Agreement between UNI Graphical & Packaging and Nampak the unions met with Senior Nampak management in Johannesburg on Friday 10^th December, prior to this meeting the Unions’ Alliance held a preparatory meeting.



Delegates and officials from South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and the UK along with UNI officers Keith Jacobs and Steve Walsh participated in the 2 day meeting.



The preparatory meeting discussed the importance of ensuring the network continues to develop and involve all member countries. A number of initiatives were identified for the unions to implement over the next 12 months.



A proposal was agreed to be put to the management of Nampak that a sub-committee led by Lemmy Mokoena from CEPPAWU meet in early 2011 with Nampak management to re-invigorate the implementation of the Global Agreement and to examine ways in which the network can work to its full potential



On the second day the UNI network met with the Company. They gave a presentation on the challenges that are being faced by Nampak across its global operations and the packaging industry generally. The delegates also heard about the growth strategy Nampak is committed to within the African continent.



There was a full and frank exchange of views on restructuring and productivity as well as the effect that continual cost cutting has on morale. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to the Global Agreement and gave their support to convening the sub committee to examine not only the content but also the implementation of the agreement going forward.
