Union Organizers working for the UNI affiliate NATAU in Namibia have launched two recognition claims with Security Companies. From an organizing campaign launched in February, the union has achieved an enormous growth in members and reached its target of 60% membership in order to qualify under the Namibian law for a minimum of "50% plus one".



Security workers in Mines, Public Buildings, Banks and Retail are now looking forward to achieving bargaining rights in 2 companies where there are none. In fact, there are no bargaining rights in any Security Company in Namibia so this represents a great achievement.



However, this is only an achievement if the numbers stay high and if it can spread to other companies.



Both NATAU and UNI are very pleased with this success so far. One of the Companies - Namibian Protection Services - is the second biggest in the country. The Security Industry is a dangerous and unsafe sector - with low wages, 12 hour days and 7 days a week working.



Ports like Fort Walvis and Swapokmund, mines in the Kalahari Desert and the city of Windhoek have all been covered by the campaign so far. With another 9 months to go it is planned to win more recognition agreements with other companies including G4S the biggest.
