A legal action has been brought against MTN and Standard Bank, claiming infringement of patent laws in relation to the mobile money transfer service the companies are offering.



The action could delay the launch of the companies' mobile money service, proving beneficial for M-Pesa and Vodafone, who are also planning to enter the South African mobile money market, targetting the 26 million people who do not hold bank accounts.



Mobile money transfer services have proven highly popular in countries such as Kenya, Tanzania and Afghanistan and are set to grow in other "emerging markets".
