The workers of MBC TV had been on strike because the management has continuously refused to engage in dialogue with the workers regarding editorial independence. MBC TV union decided to stop the strike action after 40 days and return to work to ensure that the local government election and other current issues would be reported on fairly.



Despite this Bro. Lee Keun-Haeng, president of MBC TV union was dismissed as of June 4^th, just right after the local government election in Korea. In addition a total of 40 union members and producers, reporters and technicians were given disciplinary notice of suspension, wage reduction and warning letters by the management. UNI MEI is extremely concerned about the MBC TV’s decision to take action against the staff and specifically union members who defended the independence of media and their freedom of speech by taking part in the strike.



UNI MEI and its affiliate NUMW continue to support MBC TV union in their struggle to achieve media independence and democracy. UNI MEI demands that MBC TV withdraws its decision to dismiss Bro. Lee and engages in a meaningful social dialogue to solve these issues together with the workers.
