On August 12, UNI's affiliate in the UK - Communication Workers Union - received overwhelming support for strike action from Manx Telecom workers in a dispute over pay.

 

The CWU, representing all non-management grades in Manx Telecom, balloted 200 workers after a below-inflation pay offer of 4.1 per cent was rejected. Figures for July show inflation running at 6.5 per cent on the Isle of Man. In a high turnout ballot 80 per cent of votes endorse strike action with a further 90 per cent for action short of strike.

 

Andy Kerr, deputy general secretary, said: “Below-inflation pay offers are unacceptable, especially at this time of price rises pushing up the cost of living. The Isle of Man is disproportionately hit by current fuel increases and is currently experiencing inflation well above the rate of Britain. Manx Telecom is well aware that their offer is effectively a pay-cut for their employees. We will not settle for anything that does not represent an increase in real terms in our members’ take-home pay. We are seeking further talks with the company but workers at Manx Telecom have clearly mandated the union to press ahead with strike action if a timely settlement cannot be reached.”

 

CWU members in Manx Telecom work as engineers, operators, clerical and billing staff and in retail outlets. Strike action could begin at the end of next week.
