More than 500,000 private sector employees would lose out on the option of extending their retirement age, if the minimum age of 60, was enforced on 1 July 2013.
UNI Malaysian Liaison Council (UNI-MLC) President Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal wants the retirement age to be implemented from January 1, this year.
He says that private employees who retired during the period January to June 2013 should be given the option to either hold or retire at the aged of 60 or 55 years. The current retirement age in Malaysia is 55 years.
“It is estimated that about 500,000 workers will retire in the next six months, almost one hundred thousand each month from both big and small companies.
“If some are willing to work until age 60, they should be given the opportunity to work. Those who are not willing to can stop at age 55 years.
Shafie was interviewed by the media after leading about 300 UNI-MLC members to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister's special officer at Perdana Putra Building in Putrajaya yesterday.
UNI MLC hopes that the memorandum will urge the Prime Minister to intervene in the matter.
The government’s decision in setting the enforcement of the retirement age on 1 July 2013 had disappointed workers and members of their families.
This move confused workers as to why the bill should be delayed for another six months since it was approved on 27 June last year and should be enforced on January 1.
Prior to this, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam had said that the Minimum Retirement 2012 Act which set the private sector age at 60, would come into force July 1 this year.
