The recommendation was given after MUBE had heard that employees were being subjected to pressure by the exertion of undue influence and aggressive behavior from line management to fill in the employee survey even though it was supposed to be voluntary. The directive also served as a clear protest against management’s negative attitude that is being shown towards its own performing staff.



For MUBE, the result clearly confirms that the absolute majority of staff is not happy with the current style of people management. “We also see the result as being clear proof that the majority of staff members which includes the managerial categories just cannot tolerate the situation any longer and that the key issues raised during the past years have not been seriously addressed”, says William Portelli, the President of MUBE. “In addition, the result shows that the cost challenge is set excessively high to the detriment of staff”, he continues.



Portelli sees the result as a clear message that HSBC has to change its attitude towards staff members in the Malta Group to effectively improve the working environment through a better approach to daily practice. As it does in the rest of the Banking, Finance and Insurance sectors, MUBE will continue to work for a better working environment in HSBC so as to ensure that work-life balance remains one of the top priorities.
