Los Angeles Times Pressmen Ratify New Contract
The pressroom employees had voted for representation by the Teamsters in January 2007, ending nearly 40 years of non-union status.
“The main reason we wanted to be Teamsters was for job protection,” said Dave Rascon, a 17-year press room employee. “And now, with our contract, we feel great.”
“These employees have the strength of the Teamsters Union behind them. And they have their wages, benefits and grievance procedures spelled out in a contract for the first time in many years,” said George Tedeschi, President of the GCC and Teamsters International Vice President. "The stability of having a job that is covered by a Teamster contract is priceless.”
The Los Angeles Times press workers are employed at the Times’ printing facilities in Costa Mesa and Los Angeles, California.
The Graphic Communications Conference is a trade conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The GCC represents more than 70,000 pressmen, reporters and other positions in the newspaper and magazine publishing industry.
The 250 men and women working in the press operations section of the Los Angeles Times voted in their first collective bargaining agreement with the Graphic Communications Conference (GCC) of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters yesterday.
