Trade unions representing members in Liberty Global gathered in Grenada on November 22-23 for a meeting of the Liberty Global Union Alliance. The Alliance brings together unions from Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean, where Liberty Global operates through its subsidiaries C&W and Columbus Communications (Flow).

The unions discussed the deteriorating working conditions in Liberty Global throughout the world. The company has expanded quickly over the last few years through mergers and acquisitions, and has in the process attempted to lower the pay and benefits of its long-term employees. Much work has also been outsourced from Liberty Global, to the detriment of both employees and customers who have witnessed a declining standard of service.

The unions present, representing Liberty Global workers in Belgium, the Netherlands, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, St Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, and Panama, held a press conference with local media to highlight these issues and to call upon Liberty Global to respect workers’ rights and to engage with the unions in social dialogue. The unions also organized a picket outside a Flow store in St. George’s, the Grenadian capital, where work has been outsourced and where the workers are now on precarious, short-term contracts. The picket garnered much attention from customers and passers-by, as well as from the company.
