In a statement today UNI-MEI global union expressed its support to the Korean media workers and the Korean Media Workers Union in their effort to preserve and promote the independence of the media.



UNI-MEI shares the concerns of its Korean colleagues that the newly established Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission, which will be report directly to the President will undermine the independence of the media and will not be able to fulfil its role preserving and promoting media diversity and pluralism.



The Korean Media Workers Unions will hold a press conference on Monday, 17 March, when the Korean Assembly will very likely make major decision on the future structure of the Commission. The UNI-MEI Statement was issued shortly after a briefing between the Korean union and UNI-MEI Deputy Director, Johannes Studinger urging the Korean government to review its decision and to start a dialogue with the media unions and civil society on the good governance of the media.



Following their protest actions in the coming days the Korean Media Workers Unions will report back to the UNI-MEI Asia Broadcasting Conference in Manila (April).
