UNI Global Union today welcomed news of the release of Choi Sang-Je, president of the National Union of Media Workers (NUMW) in Korea, who was arrested after his union launched spirited protests against a new law relaxing limits on media ownership.



In less than 24 hours, more than 160 UNI unions and activists sent messages to the judge in the case calling for Choi’s release.



“I will continue to struggle to nullify the illegally passed media law and to defend the independence of media and media plurality,” Choi said in a press conference after his release. “And I really thank you for your efforts for my release, particularly for UNI affiliates which extend international solidarity to Korean unions.”



The NUMW said it is still on alert because of reports that the prosecutor's office will raid the union office as part of its investigation.
