You all will of course have seen the news about the tragic earthquake and Tsunami in Japan. UNI has been in contact with our Japanese affiliates to offer our support and to see if there is some way UNI Post & Logistics and affiliates can support postal workers and their families in Japan. The JPGU, UNI's Japanese postal affiliate has reported that because the devastation is so extreme that getting accurate information about postal workers and their union members is very difficult but they have put together the attached information on the situation as of today.



International solidarity is extremely important at this difficult time and UNI is encouraging affiliates to send messages to their Japanese colleagues. The UNI Tokyo office is also handling any offers of support at this stage.



Several unions have indicated to UNI that they are making donations or providing support for Japanese postal workers, for example we were advised by the Vietnam Post and Telecom Workers Union (VNUPTW) that they were accessing a special social fund in Vietnam to make a very generous $US10,000 donation to the Post & Telecom unions in Japan ($US5,000 for each union).



UNI Post & Logistics will keep affiliates informed of the situation and has sent best wishes and condolences to postal workers and families who have lost lives and been so seriously affected by this tragedy.
