Japan Postal Union sponsors children of Phil Post Union Members

![]() On 30 April, Tokyo branch of Japan Postal Group Union (JPGU), one of the major UNI affiliates in Japan, tendered a recognition ceremony for graduates and current scholars of the JPGU Tokyo/ UNI-PLC (UNI Global Union - Philippine Liaison Council) Scholarship Program for poor but serving children of PhilPost employees held at the UNI-PLC headquarters in Cubao, Quezon City, Manila, the Philippines. The scholarship program was initiated in 2001 with the financial support of former JPU Tokyo, which jointly formed JPGU Tokyo with former Zen-yusei Tokyo in conjunction with the historical amalgamation of their HQs, JPGU and Zen-yusei, in October 2007 to tackle with the challenges of privatization of Japan Post. Bro. JOSE P. UMALI, JR., General Secretary of UNI-PLC and Bro. DEOSDADO DE GUZMAN, President of PEUP welcomed the JPGU Tokyo delegation composed of Bro. Kazumi Sato, president, Bro. Shoichi Shibui, vice president, Bro. Koji Kawauchi, exco member, Bro. Satoshi Watanabe, exco member, and appreciated for their continuous support for the program. Bro. Kazumi Sato, president of JPGU Tokyo acknowledged the effort of the two postal unions in the Philippines, the PEUP and KKKP for organizing the program along with UNI-PLC. “We will continue with the program for the benefit of the families of postal employees in response to the request of UNI-PLC in promoting friendship and mutual cooperation of both countries,” Sato said. The scholarship program has sent out 16 graduates since 2005 and 4 of them, who have successfully started working in good companies, attended the ceremony and expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the continuous financial assistance of JPGU Tokyo which has helped them to complete their studies and making their dreams come true. Following the presentation of plaques of appreciation from both PEUP and KKKP to JPGU Tokyo, new memorandum of understanding for the scholarship program was signed between JPGU Tokyo and UNI-PLC, which assured that JPGU Tokyo would continuously support the program. 6 ambitious children from the both unions will be nominated for the new batch of the school year 2009-2010. |
